Dr Joan Ploem Miller was born in Indonesia to Dutch parents. When Indonesia became independent her family immigrated first to The Hague, Netherlands and then to Hillsboro, Oregon. She became focused on optometry as a career at age 13 when she learned she was nearsighted. She was a dedicated student and graduated from Pacific University College of Optometry with distinction. She received awards there for the research she did that helped the first extended wear contact lenses get FDA approved. She started her own private practice of optometry in 1979 and was an adjunct faculty member at Pacific for years. She has become well-known for her caring and thorough approach in solving patient problems. In 2002 Dr. Miller was named Oregon optometrist of the year. She founded a group called OD Divas which includes nearly 6000 women in optometry on Facebook. She received a Women in Optometry Theia award in the Influencer category in 2019. She has been a leader in optometry, serving on the Oregon Board of Optometry 13 years and was President of that board for 7 years. She also helps the National Board of Examiners in Optometry write the tests optometrists take prior to practicing optometry. For more than four decades she has been a leader in using the latest technology and research to benefit her patients. She has taken care of patients as young as three months and as old as 108 years. Her optometry practice encompasses a broad range with major emphasis in treating and preventing eye disease. She educates her patients about everything from glaucoma and preventing macular degeneration to providing long lasting comfort for dry eyes and optimizing contact lenses for long term success.
Bailey is our lead Optician. She joined our team on Valentine’s Day in 2022. Having entered the vision world as a Optometric Technician, Bailey has spent the last three years honing her skills as an Optician. With an eye towards fashion, Bailey believes that eyewear doesn’t detract from your overall appearance, but rather elevates it. She loves helping patients find a pair of glasses that they actually want to wear. In her free time Bailey enjoys reading, making candles, and continuously proving her friends and family wrong when told that she couldn’t possibly find enough space for another houseplant.
Maritza is one of our skilled technicians and joined our eye care team in 2016. She genuinely enjoys people and will take the time to accommodate your needs and make you feel comfortable during your visit. Being passionate about helping others is what makes her an ideal team member. She is fluent in Spanish and gladly provides translation services. Maritza graduated from Eastern New Mexico University with a BS in Criminal Justice. When she is not in the office she loves spending time outdoors or with her family.
